Marcos Fernández has become one of the biggest pre-season surprises at Espanyol. The forward has returned from his loan at Ceuta determined to earn a place in the squad, and he is already starting to appear as one of those names fantasy managers should keep a close eye on.

RCD Espanyol

Three goals and a pre-season that changes his future

The attacker has three goals to his name during the preparation, after scoring against Olot, Pau FC and Middlesbrough. Against the English side, he also put in his most complete performance, contributing a goal, an assist and a lot of offensive work.

His output can hardly be considered an isolated surprise. Marcos comes from scoring 14 goals and providing two assists in 36 Segunda División matches with Ceuta, numbers that gave him the chance to return to Espanyol with real options to stay.

A zero-cost gamble that could pay off handsomely

Espanyol signed the forward in 2025 after his contract with the Betis. ended. There was no transfer fee, he was tied down until 2028 and the club then opted for a loan to speed up his development.

The deal, driven by the previous sporting directorate led by Fran Garagarza, is now starting to bear fruit. The club is getting back a more ready player, with professional experience and a clearly higher market value.

What role could he have at Espanyol?

Marcos Fernández offers a different profile to that of Kike García and Roberto Fernández. He can play as a centre-forward, operate as a second striker or move out to the flanks to attack the spaces.

Manolo González could use him as third forward and a regular option from the bench. However, if he maintains his current level, it would not be surprising if he ended up playing more minutes than initially expected.

From a fantasy perspective, we are looking at one of the most interesting names of the pre-season. His price should start below that of other, more established forwards, but the goals and the possibility of staying in the first team could trigger a rapid rise in value.

Marcos Fernández is still not a completely safe pick, as he currently sits behind Kike García and Roberto Fernández. Even so, he could be a very attractive speculative buy in Comunio, Biwenger and LaLiga Fantasy if he appears at a reduced price.

The Espanyol were looking for a useful forward without making a big investment and they may have found him within their own squad. Marcos is pushing hard for his chance, and he could go from being an unexpected alternative to becoming one of the first fantasy bargains of the season.
