DFMalaga are having problems out wide again. A fresh injury threatens to disrupt their plans. This time, the player affected was Rafita, who had to leave the pitch in the 20th minute of the match against Racing Santander.
The Malaga-born player had regained a more prominent role in a different position. After several matches playing as a centre-back, Funes decided to deploy him at right wing-back to cover the late absence of Carlos Puga, who was carrying a knee problem.
The injury came after what looked like a harmless passage of play. Rafita made a run after Malaga had worked the ball around, but ended up on the ground without any contact. The medical staff were quickly on the scene and, although he was able to leave the field under his own steam, he did so with a very noticeable limp. Larrubia came on in his place.
Larrubia, a temporary fix on the right
For now, Larrubia has filled the right wing-back role, although we will have to wait to see whether the coach keeps this solution for the next fixtures.
The problem comes at a delicate time for Malaga, who have also suffered setbacks in other wide areas. The absences of Aaron Ochoa, Lobete and Joaquin Munoz had already reduced the team's attacking options.
His Spain Under-21 call-up in doubt
The injury could also have consequences for Rafita himself at international level. The player had been included in the Spain Under-21 squad, who are due to play their next fixture on 13 November.
His involvement will depend on the tests and how he progresses over the next few hours. The international break could give him time to recover, although it is still too early to know the extent of his problem.
Fantasy angle
We will have to keep an eye on the medical bulletin. Larrubia is gaining ground as an alternative on the right while Rafita and Puga remain doubts, and we need to wait for the extent of Rafita's injury before making a decision.
