The Valencia player Valencia reacted via Instagram after what happened in the derby against Villarreal, a match also marked by his sending-off. Elliott received two yellow cards and had to leave the pitch after the referee showed him a second for addressing him.

The incident had a particularly striking detail. Valencia CF were playing with one more man from the 79th minute, when Gueye was sent off. The Englishman's second booking ended with that numerical advantage and left both teams with ten players.

The referee's report states that Elliott was booked for addressing the referee, although it does not include the specific words that led to the decision. His dismissal came at a delicate time for Mestalla, who are going through a difficult spell and need to improve their results.

The player has wasted no time in publicly taking responsibility and has posted a message aimed at the dressing room and Valencia supporters.

"I would like to apologise to my team-mates and to the incredible Valencia CF fans for yesterday's sending-off. I made a mistake and I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart. It won't happen again", Elliott wrote on Instagram.

The Englishman also used his post to refer to the moment the team is going through and make clear his intention to work to help change the sporting dynamic.

"Right now, I'm only focused on coming back, working even harder and helping the team get out of this situation as soon as possible", the midfielder added.

Elliott ended his statement thanking the support received from the fans and signed off with a message of backing for the club: "Amunt Valencia 🦇❤️".
