Terzic forgets about Hugo Rincón
Hugo Rincón started the season with an important chance to carve out a place at right back for Athletic, but his situation has changed in just a few matchdays. The Navarrese player has racked up four consecutive games without playing and has fallen behind Jesús Areso and Jokaneko in Edin Terzic's plans.
Athletic Club
The 23-year-old full-back returned to Lezama after a season of growth at Girona, where he played 35 official matches and scored a goal, precisely against Athletic at Montilivi. Before that, he had completed a standout loan spell at Mirandés, with 44 appearances and three goals, after leaving the rojiblanco club in the summer of 2024.
His return seemed to open up an opportunity in a position that has gone without an undisputed owner for some time. After Óscar de Marcos retired, Ernesto Valverde used last season's campaign at right back with Jesús Areso, Andoni Gorosabel, Iñigo Lekue and even Dani Vivian. Subsequent squad moves did not end that competition for the spot either.
Hugo Rincón350.000€-20.000€-
DFRincón left a good impression during pre-season and started out with playing time under Terzic. He made his debut for the first team on the opening matchday against Sevilla, coming on for Paredes in the 74th minute. Five days later, he was in the starting XI against Barcelona at Camp Nou.
Since that game, he has not stepped onto the pitch in an official match.
Areso and Jokaneko gain ground on Hugo Rincón
After six La Liga matchdays, Hugo Rincón has only 106 minutes. Among the defenders available, he is the one with the least involvement, leaving aside Dani Vivian and Unai Egiluz, who still have not been able to play due to injury.
Jesús Areso1.760.000€0
DFTerzic's main bet at right back is Jesús Areso, who has featured in five matches. Jokaneko has also played in five games and started the most recent derby against Alavés at San Mamés, although he only played the first half.
Rincón, meanwhile, has four full matchdays on the bench. A situation that contrasts with the expectations created after his return and with the attacking profile of a player who seemed to fit the German coach's proposal.
The current competitive break opens up a new chance to add minutes. The Athletic will play this Friday against the Real Sociedad, at Anoeta, the final of the Euskal Herria Txapela, a match in which Rincón could again get playing time before the return of official competition.
After that, a packed schedule awaits the Athletic: six La Liga matchdays before the next break, four of them away from Bilbao, as well as the first Copa del Rey round against an opponent from the regional leagues or Tercera RFEF.
