The clash took place in a duel between Gerard Martín and Víctor García. The Levante forward was trying to start a transition when he opened his arms and ended up accidentally catching the blue-and-red player in the face with his elbow, leaving him down on the ground and bleeding.

The incident continued and ended with a claim for a possible penalty by Pedri, although the whole move was ruled out by a prior offside. The impact on Gerard Martín also sparked protests over a possible foul that Jon Ander González did not call.

The referee, making his debut in the category, decided to play on. His approach during the match was lenient, with few stoppages despite the increased intensity from Levante.

Flick decided to replace him at half-time

Gerard Martín was not the only Barcelona player to be treated: a few minutes later, Xavi Espart took a heavy blow to the abdomen, was left without breath for a few seconds, and also had to leave the pitch temporarily.
