Atlético de Madrid are getting closer and closer to signing Cristian 'Cuti' Romero. The Argentine centre-back is one of Diego Pablo Simeone's top priorities as he looks to strengthen the defence, and negotiations have made a major step forward in recent hours.

As reported by Argentine journalist Esteban Edul, of ESPN, Cuti Romero is "details" away from becoming a new player for Atlético de Madrid. The player has already shown his complete willingness to play for the rojiblancos and to begin a new chapter in LaLiga.

The first major obstacle in the deal would already be cleared. Atlético de Madrid and Cuti Romero have reached a contractual agreement for the Argentine international to join Simeone's project. TEAMtalk even points to a contract for the next four seasons, with financial terms similar to those he currently has at Tottenham.

The player's desire could prove decisive. Cuti Romero wants to play in Spain and prioritises the option of Atlético, where he would also have the chance to work with Simeone and share a dressing room with several Argentine national team team-mates.

The signing, however, cannot yet be considered done. Once an understanding has been reached with the player, Atlético still has to resolve the most important part of the operation: finalising the definitive agreement with Tottenham for the transfer of Cuti Romero.

The English club had held talks with the Inter de Milán over a deal close to 40 million pounds. According to The Times, the Italians had moved forward with Tottenham, but had not managed to agree personal terms with the defender. Atlético have taken advantage of that situation to gain ground in the race for his signature.

The rojiblancos know they will have to move closer to the Spurs' financial demands. Talks continue and there is optimism about the possibility of reaching an agreement, although there are still financial details to be worked out between the two clubs.

Cuti Romero, Simeone's top defensive priority

The name of Cristian Romero is nothing new in the offices of the Metropolitano. Simeone has been considering the world champion as an ideal player to raise the competitive level of his defence thanks to his aggressiveness, leadership, physicality and experience at the highest level.

The situation is now considerably more favourable for Atlético. The agreement with Cuti Romero would be on track and the Argentine has chosen the rojiblanco option. Atlético and Tottenham just need to find the financial meeting point that will allow one of the biggest moves of the transfer window to be completed.

For now, caution is still needed, but the picture has changed: Cuti Romero is closer than ever to becoming a new player for Atlético de Madrid.
