The future of Thomas Meunier remains tied to two fronts: negotiations with Valencia CF and Belgium's run at the World Cup. The right-back continues to compete with his national team, but that has not slowed down contacts about a possible move to Mestalla.

Valencia CF

Belgium's situation in the tournament could weigh on the timing of the operation. The Red Devils have signed two draws in their first two matches, against Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0), and they face the final group-stage match against New Zealand with the obligation to win in order to go through.

An early exit would make things easier for the Valencia CF, both in terms of recruitment and planning for pre-season. At the club they understand that if Belgium goes out early, Meunier could resolve his future sooner and join the team with more room to work.

The Belgian international is the name that most convinces Carlos Corberan to strengthen the right flank. His experience and leadership fit the profile the coach is looking for, while talks remain active despite the World Cup competition. In other recent moves, such as Marc Cucurella's to Real Madrid or Víctor Muñoz's to Liverpool, negotiations have also progressed with tournaments ongoing.

Meunier builds momentum with Belgium

On the sporting side, Meunier has started in both matches played by Belgium. He played the 90 minutes against Egypt and was on the pitch for 58 minutes against Iran, a match in which he reached his tenth World Cup appearance since making his debut in 2018.

Valencia is also working on other options for the right-back position. One of them is Andrés García, Aston Villa's player whose loan has been on the table for months, although for now there is no official offer to the English club.

Interest in the Valencia player is not limited to Mestalla. Olympique de Lyon, fourth in Ligue 1 and with a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round, has already made a firm proposal to sign him next season. Deportivo Alavés of Quique Sánchez Flores is also keeping an eye on his situation.
