The team led by Íñigo Pérez had many chances to equalize the match, but with the saves by Joan García and Araujo’s goal, the Catalan team secured a miraculous victory.

FIRST HALF

Not even sixty seconds had passed from the start of the match when Rayo had the first great chance. After a good transition down the right wing, Fran Pérez outran Ronald Araújo and, with a precise cutback pass, left Carlos Martín alone to push it in. However, Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Joan García, was providential and, with a great low save, prevented the first goal of the match.

In the 10th minute, after a good carry from the midfield by Barcelona center-back Gerard Martín, he managed to find space for a shot, but his attempt was too central and was easily stopped by Batalla in two attempts. Still, Barcelona’s next chance came quickly after a serious error by Pathé Ciss; Brazilian Raphinha recovered the ball and faced Batalla one-on-one, but he finished poorly and missed a very clear chance.

In the 22nd minute, following a magnificent outside foot pass from Lamine Yamal, Raphinha failed to connect well with the shot, and his chipped but dangerous attempt forced Batalla to intervene to deflect it for a corner. From that same corner, after a good cross from Cancelo to the far post, Ronald Araújo headed it and opened the scoring, putting 1-0 for the home side.

Five minutes after the goal, the team coached by Flick nearly got the second. After a great dribble by Raphinha inside the box, the Brazilian volleyed quickly, but his shot crashed against the crossbar following a spectacular save by the Argentinian Rayo goalkeeper.

SECOND HALF

The second half began with clear dominance from the Catalan team.

In the 55th minute, after a great individual play by Lamine Yamal inside the box, he positioned himself with his weaker foot, but his shot went wide. However, in the 62nd minute, Íñigo Pérez’s side had a great chance to equalize: from a corner, a Rayo midfielder headed the ball, but Joan García made a spectacular save to maintain his team’s lead.

In the 67th minute, Dani Olmo tried his luck with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, although his strike missed the goal and went far wide of Batalla’s net.

Later, the match was stopped for a few minutes after the main referee requested through the loudspeaker that the local crowd be called to order, as some spectators were using whistles, which could cause confusion on the pitch.

In the final ten minutes of the match, Rayo’s Argentinian goalkeeper made a serious error trying to dribble past Raphinha; the winger stole the ball, but the play did not end in a goal thanks to a quick defensive intervention. Immediately afterward, Rayo had a very clear chance to equalize, after a great pass from Chavarría, Pacha Espino was left alone against Joan García, but he finished very inaccurately and wasted what would have been the equalizer.

In the 89th minute, Rayo again came close to scoring. A shot from Jorge De Frutos from the edge of the box forced Joan García to shine again with a great save, diverting the ball to a corner kick.
