The coach's decision was not random. Carreras, signed this summer, had been undisputed for Xabi Alonso, but his benching against Rayo was seen as a response to his performance in Lisbon against Benfica. He warmed up on the sideline but did not play a single minute.

Arbeloa had previously used Camavinga as a full-back, a decision he repeated in the match against Rayo Vallecano. Meanwhile, Carreras and Fran García awaited their chance on the bench. The club reinforced the left-back position with the arrival of Carreras for 50 million euros from Benfica, and plans point to summer movements: Fran García and Mendy are on the way out, although in January, the Spaniard was close to leaving and the club halted the operation.
