The Real Sociedad have bet on continuity with Pellegrino Matarazzo. The club has announced the renewal of the coach through June 2028, a decision that comes after the major impact he has had since arriving on the Donostia bench last winter.

The Italian-American coach landed in San Sebastian in late 2025 to replace Sergio Francisco, with the team going through a difficult spell in LaLiga and very close to the relegation zone. In just a few months, he managed to turn the situation around and put together a brilliant end to the season.

The biggest success came with winning the Copa del Rey, a title that Real secured by beating Atlético de Madrid in the final and which also guaranteed qualification for next season's Europa League.

The initial contract tied Matarazzo to the club until the end of the 2026-27 season, but the team's performance and the good rapport with the board accelerated talks to extend the deal by another year. The club also views very positively his integration into the city and the closeness he has shown with the fans since his arrival.

With the renewal now already in place, Matarazzo is running a new pre-season with the aim of maintaining the level shown in recent months. Alongside his assistants, John Maisano and Omer Toprak, he is already working with a squad that is still incomplete, shaped by several player absences who continue to recover from the injuries suffered last campaign.

The coach made clear from the very first training session what the bar will be for the new season. "I want training sessions with maximum intensity; we train to compete and we compete to win", he said to his players, setting the working line with which he hopes to keep helping Real Sociedad grow.
