The worst news is confirmed for Racing de Santander. The Cantabrian club has officially announced that Álvaro Mantilla has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, after getting injured during the match played on Sunday against Real Madrid at El Sardinero.

The right-back had to leave the pitch in the 28th minute, after suffering a bad landing in an incident inside the area. Although he tried to check whether he could continue, the pain forced him to request a substitution and Pedro Felipe took his place.

Mantilla will have to go under the knife

Imaging tests carried out this Monday have confirmed the seriousness of the injury. According to the medical report provided by Racing, Mantilla has a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be operated on in the coming days.

The club has not yet set a specific recovery timeline, although this type of injury usually requires between six and nine months on the sidelines, which may be extended depending on the player's progress. As a result, his return to the pitch could come in the final stretch of the 2026/27 season, or even later.

From Racing, they also wanted to stress that, although Mantilla will have to stay away from the pitch for a long period, he will continue to play an important role in the dressing room, where he is one of the captains and a key reference point for the team.

A major setback for Racing and fantasy managers

The injury is a heavy blow for the Santander side, who lose one of their usual players at right-back. The coaching staff will have to look for alternatives to cover his absence, starting with the match next Saturday, November 7, against Málaga.
