The return of the Real Betis to the Champions League, 21 years later, comes with an important doubt in defence. Manuel Pellegrini will have to assess in the coming hours whether to include Diego Llorente in the party travelling on Monday to Lille, where the team will train in the afternoon at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium.

The centre-back had to leave yesterday's match in the 36th minute, replaced by Marc Bartra, after a heavy blow with Marc Roca. The incident happened in a messy moment, with Bellingham and Mbappé contesting the ball, and it ended with both Betis players on the ground after a head-on collision.

The check with the ENT specialist has ruled out surgery. Llorente suffered a fracture of the nasal bones with a deviated septum, although the reduction could be carried out in the stadium's medical room. From now on, he will have to train and compete with facial protection.

The club has already started the process to make a custom-made mask. In the meantime, the defender will try a standard one, and whether he can finally be in Lille or not will depend on that adaptation. Pellegrini, in any case, could opt to hold him back and focus on the commitments of the following week against Villarreal, Getafe and Deportivo, before the long two-week break without top-flight football.

Betis will work this week and on Sunday behind closed doors before travelling to France on Monday morning. The confirmed absences for the European debut are Aitor Ruibal and the goalkeeper Diego Conde. Ez Abde, Dani Ceballos and Giovani Lo Celso are fit to be included in the squad, a list in which Pellegrini has 25 players if Llorente gives the go-ahead.
