The CTA accepts the error in the red card for Yuri, but does not correct it

The blow for the Athletic was twofold. First, because Terzic's side were down to ten players very early on at San Mamés; then, because the CTA's ruling arrived when the relevant committees had already not withdrawn the red card.

The incident happened in the opening minutes of the match. Sierra tried to reach a loose ball after a clearance by Paredes; Yuri lost his position and ended up grabbing the Sevilla attacker slightly. The referee interpreted the incident as deserving a straight red, a decision that shaped Terzic's home league debut.

The CTA's analysis does not back up Soto Grado's reading. According to the Committee, Sierra had no option to continue the move because his touch had gone astray, meaning there was no clear goal-scoring opportunity. The incident should have been punished with a foul, but without a card.

The full-back's reaction did not take long. Yuri posted a message after the Federation released its weekly video featuring the day's most controversial moments: "After watching the video and reading your verdict, what I had to pay still hurts even more, and consequently, most importantly, my team, which was left with one man less from minute 12. 100% unjust".

The defender also regretted that it will be him who has to serve the sanction in the next fixture. He described the punishment as "regrettable", even though the CTA itself admits that VAR should have intervened to correct the decision made on the pitch.

Athletic had lodged an appeal, but the RFEF's Disciplinary Committee rejected it for not finding conclusive evidence to overturn the report or to prove a clear material error. Hours later, the Technical Committee of Referees did publicly point to the refereeing mistake.

Iñaki Williams had already defended after the defeat that the incident "can never be a red" because Sierra's control had gone long. Terzic, meanwhile, avoided going into the incident in front of the media.

The Federation and the CTA rolled out with this video a renewed format to explain their refereeing analyses. The actions are selected by LaLiga through an artificial intelligence system that identifies the most relevant moments, and the Committee then carries out its technical assessment.
