The Celta coach racked up 107 different lineups in his first 107 official matches.

R.C. Celta de Vigo

There are coaches who have a first-choice lineup, others who make two or three tweaks depending on the opponent, and then there is Claudio Giraldez, who prepares each lineup as if he were filling in a Primitiva combination.

The Celta de Vigo boss reached a hard-to-believe statistic: 107 official matches and 107 different lineups. Not a single repeat. The figure, originally published by Faro de Vigo, makes Giraldez a one-of-a-kind coach and, at the same time, the public enemy number one of any Comunio, Biwenger, Futmondo or LaLiga Fantasy manager.

Giraldez does not rotate: he unveils lineups

The word “rotation” is too small for what he does. Rotating means switching a full-back, giving a midfielder a rest, or benching a striker after three goalless matches. Giraldez's approach is something else. The Celeste coach seems to walk into the dressing room, look at his players, and think: “This lineup is already too similar to the one from three months ago, let's move something.

The result is 107 different combinations in 107 matches. A collection of lineups even more extensive than the Rodri transfer deal plot twists, with an equally unpredictable storyline. Just when you think you have figured out who is the starter, a academy player appears. When you buy the academy player, a veteran comes back. And when you sell the veteran, Giraldez puts him in the starting XI, as a wide player, with freedom to get into the box.

The weekly drama for the fantasy manager

The owner of a Celeste player goes through the same phases every week. On Monday, he is convinced his player will start. On Wednesday, he reads a positive piece of news and celebrates the purchase. On Friday, he checks Comuniate's possible lineups and starts to have doubts. Finally match day arrives: he sees the confirmed XI and discovers his player sitting on the bench in a green bib.

Giraldez can turn 90% odds of starting into a test of faith. It does not matter how well the player did the previous match, the week's training sessions, or that the player appears in six different probable XIs. The coach always keeps one last card up his sleeve: do something he has not done yet.

And the worst part is that it often works. His changes usually have a tactical explanation, he adapts the pieces to the opponent, and he has managed to make practically the entire squad feel important. Great for Celta, wonderful for dressing-room management, and absolutely devastating for whoever is fighting for the lead in their fantasy league.

Can you sign Celta players?

Yes, but with caveats. With Giraldez, it is dangerous to pay an outrageous amount just because a player has strung together two starts. In this team, starting two consecutive weeks is not a hierarchy: it is a historic run.

The Celeste coach does not only put managers to the test. He also forces the people responsible for possible lineups to work with more tabs open than a student the night before an exam. Training sessions, statements, minute loads, the opponent, the tactical system, and the feel of things: any clue is valid if you want to try to get inside the coach's head.

But maybe that is the real problem: Giraldez also does not want to repeat his own ideas. While other coaches have a recognizable core, the Celta boss treats each match like a different puzzle. And when Comuniate thinks it has found all the pieces, Claudio shows up with one that belongs in another box.

That is why, if you have a Celeste player and this week he is listed as a doubt, stay calm. He could be a substitute, a starter, a wide player, an attacking midfielder, or the surprise of the weekend. With Giraldez, there is only one certainty: the next XI will be different.
