Fabrizio Romano gives the 'Here we go' to one of the big surprises of the transfer window: Liverpool have reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to sign Ronald Araújo on loan.

FC Barcelona

A completely unexpected move at the FC Barcelona. Ronald Araújo is about to become a new Liverpool player after both clubs reached an agreement for the loan of the Uruguayan centre-back. The information was first reported by Fabrizio Romano, who has already given his well-known “Here we go” to the deal.

The move is one of the biggest surprises of this stage of the market, especially because Araújo had shown his intention to stay at Barcelona and fight to regain his role. In the end, the prospect of playing in the Premier League has triggered a radical change of setting.

Agreement between Barcelona and Liverpool for Araújo

According to Fabrizio Romano, there is already a verbal agreement between Barcelona and Liverpool for the Uruguayan international to play on loan in the English club. The operation has also received the go-ahead from Deco, so only the final steps would remain before completing the move.

That way, Liverpool add a centre-back with enormous experience and physical presence, while Barça offloads one of the key names in their defence. Araújo has a long-term contract with the Blaugrana side, so this loan would allow the player to seek continuity before deciding his future again.

It reshapes the defence picture at Barça

Araújo's departure also brings an important change to Hansi Flick's plans. The coach loses a top-level option at the heart of the defence and will have to reorganize a position where, until now, he had numerous choices.

Pau Cubarsí and Eric García appear as two of the biggest beneficiaries from the move. Both could still gain even more weight in the Blaugrana side's line-ups, while Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martín will also have more opportunities to accumulate minutes.

We will also have to keep an eye on Barcelona's next moves. The club had shown confidence in the centre-backs in the squad and did not seem to consider an addition to that position a priority, but the unexpected departure of Araújo could change the scenario during the final weeks of the transfer window.
