The Real Sociedad are already making moves to strengthen the midfield, and one of the names that has gained the most momentum in recent hours is Edson Álvarez. The Mexican international, currently at the West Ham, is among the priorities for the txuri-urdin side and talks between the clubs have already begun, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

The 28-year-old midfielder is under contract with the West Ham until 2028, but everything points to him changing clubs this summer after the London club's relegation. Last season he played on loan at the Fenerbahçe, where he once again showed his solidity in midfield and his ability to perform in matches with the highest demands.

Ajax, the club where he played between 2019 and 2023, is also working to bring the player back. According to De Telegraaf, the Real Sociedad would have tabled an offer of 7.5 million euros for the 50% of his rights, including an option to acquire the remaining percentage through different variables and bonuses.

Edson Álvarez stands out for his physical power, ability to win back the ball and leadership. Although his natural position is that of a defensive pivot, he can also play as a centre-back, a versatility that fits with Alexander Matarazzo's style of play. With Mexico, he is an undisputed piece and serves as captain of the national team.

In the 2025/26 season, he played 41 official matches between Fenerbahçe and the Mexican national team, scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists. In addition, he maintained the defensive level that has characterized him throughout his career, being one of the midfielders with the greatest ability to balance the team.

The Real Sociedad are still not announcing signings with just over two weeks until the start of LaLiga, but negotiations for Edson Álvarez are moving forward. If talks with the West Ham reach a successful conclusion, the Mexican could become the first reinforcement of Matarazzo's project.
