De Jong's knee complicates Barça's planning

The medical department is once again in De Jong's path. The 29-year-old midfielder cut short his vacation after the World Cup to undergo medical tests at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, where the examinations confirmed a severe problem in his right knee.

The Barcelona rules out a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, the worst-case scenario, but the injury still means he has to stop. The minimum timeline puts his absence until November, so he will not play in pre-season or at the start of LaLiga. He is also ruled out of the first phase of the revamped Champions League.

Unrest with the Netherlands

The issue is not explained solely by the medical report. De Jong had already gone to the Netherlands camp with accumulated discomfort in the lower body and recent history in his ankle. Even so, he finished the World Cup and forced the round of 16 tie against Morocco.

The player would have turned to anti-inflammatories and injections to play that match, a decision that has caused unease within the blue-and-garnet club. In the board led by Joan Laporta, they believe the KNVB did not protect well enough a player who was carrying physical problems and who returned to Barcelona with an injury of greater scope.

The medical services are considering two routes. The first involves conservative treatment, with rest, regenerative therapy, and progressive rehabilitation. The second includes a surgical procedure to clean the affected area and strengthen the recovery of the joint.

Hansi Flick is also affected by the absence. The coach had De Jong down as an important piece in the double pivot, especially for his ability to play the ball out cleanly and organize the team from the base. Without him, Gavi and Pedri will have to take on more responsibility in midfield, while the coaching staff weighs internal solutions and possible opportunities for La Masia players.

The injury also shifts the market. Deco is now working with greater urgency on the search for a midfielder who can bring balance and creativity, although the club's financial limitations and the obvious need for Barça could make any deal more expensive.
