The transfer market has barely kicked off, but at Espanyol some priorities are already starting to take shape. While the sporting department led by Monchi works on rebuilding the squad for next season, one of the names gaining the most momentum is Álex Calatrava, one of LaLiga Hypermotion's big breakout stars.

Mika Mármol, who has been linked with the blanquiazul side on several occasions over the past few years, will not finally be part of the club's plans. According to the latest reports, the Las Palmas defender does not quite fit the profile Espanyol is looking for to strengthen its back line, and the sporting leadership is already exploring other options for that position.

With the defense on the back burner, attention shifts to attack, where Calatrava comes into the picture. A player who was close to joining Cornellà last past summer, he is back on Espanyol's agenda after a standout season with Castellón.

At 25 years old, the Catalan winger has been one of the most decisive players in the division. He usually starts from the right wing, although he has the ability to move across the entire attacking front. He stands out for his pace, his ease in beating opponents in one-on-one situations, and his ability to create danger both with crosses and with runs into the area.

Along with providing constant imbalance, he has put up very impressive numbers in attacking output, contributing directly to a large number of goals and becoming one of Castellón's key references throughout the campaign.

Beyond the figures, Calatrava stands out for his intensity without the ball and his ability to read different match situations. He can operate as a classic winger staying close to the touchline, but he can also come inside to link up and create advantages near the opposing box.

At Espanyol, they believe he has several of the traits the squad needs: youth, room to grow, knowledge of Spanish football, and an attacking profile capable of making a difference. In addition, his progress over the last few seasons suggests that he can still take another step up in his performance.

2025/26 season figures: 14 goals and 8 assists in 41 LaLiga Hypermotion matches, as the top scorer for Castellón and one of the most productive players in the entire division. Minutes played: 3,489, with 40 starts.  Shots taken: 82 during the season.
