According to journalist Guillermo Rai, the injury is believed to have occurred during Kang-In Lee's challenge on the Uruguayan player. The incident sparked numerous protests from Madrid fans both during the match and afterwards. Mourinho even showed a printed screenshot of the moment, while the club said on its official website that an officiating error had occurred.

The setback comes after the Real Madrid defeat in the derby, a result that has left Los Blancos six points behind Barcelona in LaLiga.

The situation also raises a question mark over whether Valverde will be with Uruguay during the next international break. The usual scenario would be that he does not travel with his national team and instead stays in Valdebebas recovering, although that situation has not yet been confirmed.
