Yuri tightens the grip on Athletic in the final stretch

The Athletic have several matters on the table this summer, but few generate as much internal attention as the renewal of Yuri Berchiche. The left-back is out of contract and, although both sides are willing to extend the relationship, an agreement still has not been reached.

The situation is striking because the understanding seemed close a few months ago. Talks began before Holy Week and made positive progress. However, the positions gradually moved further apart to the point of temporarily cooling off. Contacts were resumed later, although the final consensus has still not been reached.

The main point of debate centers on the player's economic valuation. Yuri is willing to stay for one more season in Bilbao, until June 2027, but he believes his recent performances deserve recognition that matches what he has contributed on the pitch.

At 36 years old, the defender completed one of the most solid campaigns of his recent career. He was a constant reference in the team, maintained a level of consistency that is hard to find in the squad, and even responded when the collective performance went through difficult spells.

Sporting management knows that finding an immediate replacement with experience, performance, and leadership is not easy. That is why the player's continuity takes on strategic value for the project.

In addition, the player himself hinted months ago that he was not willing to extend his career if he did not feel physically prepared. That uncertainty has disappeared after a season in which he showed a very high competitive level and finished the campaign in good condition.

His link with Bilbao also works in favor of the operation. Yuri feels fully identified with the club and maintains an excellent relationship with the rojiblanco surroundings. The intention to continue is there, but the defender wants the new contract to reflect the importance he has had within the team.  Let us not forget that in the last home match of the Athletic, the fans chanted his name and sang the ¡Yuri quédate ¡
