Ibrahima Konaté is set to leave Liverpool when his contract expires next June 30. The French center-back, who weeks ago had opened the door to continue, has ultimately not reached an agreement with the English club.

The change of scenery makes the defender one of the most attractive names on the market. At his 27 years, Konaté arrives at this stage with an unusual contractual situation for a player of his profile: international, with elite experience and still in his prime competitive years.

A turn after bringing positions closer

The possibility of renewing had gained strength in mid-April, when the player himself hinted that his continuation was very likely. At that time he stated: “There is a great chance that I will continue here next season. That is what I have always wanted”. He even went further by saying he was close to signing and referred to Arne Slot when everything was ready.

The outcome, however, has been different. According to journalist Ben Jacobs from Give Me Sport, it is expected that Konaté will leave Liverpool because no agreement has been reached between the parties, despite the center-back indicating in April that the deal was imminent. The information was also supported by Sky.

Developed at RB Leipzig before his arrival at Anfield in 2021 for around 40 million euros, Konaté has been linked in recent months with Real Madrid, although the source text does not specify any progress or ongoing negotiations with the Spanish club.

His spell at Liverpool, barring another twist, will end after five seasons, 183 official matches, seven goals, and four assists. During that period he won a Premier League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and an English Super Cup.
