Lejeune and Diego López leave a draw with a short taste at Mestalla
Valencia and Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 in an intense match with more classification tension than the table shows. The Madrid team struck first with a header from Lejeune, but Valencia reacted before halftime thanks to Diego López, the most destabilizing player on the Che side. The point shared keeps both teams' hopes alive.
Carlos Corberán's team arrived reinforced after the win at San Mamés and with the possibility of putting their permanence very well on track. Opposite appeared a competitive and very reliable Rayo in recent matches, capable of disputing possession and sustaining uncomfortable games away from Vallecas. Mestalla responded from the start and the match kicked off at a high pace with many attacking moves.
First half
Rayo started the match better. They pressed high, attacked especially down the left flank, and found spaces against a somewhat imprecise Valencia in the first minutes. The best visitor chance came early with a penalty caused by Rayo's offensive insistence, although Randy Nteka failed to beat Dimitrievski, who kept Valencia afloat in one of the most delicate moments of the game.
The warning did not stop Íñigo Pérez's team. On a set-piece, Gumbau put in a precise cross to the far post and Florian Lejeune appeared completely free to score a header for the 0-1. The center-back was again decisive in the opposing area and punished the home side's defensive doubts.
Valencia gradually reacted. Javi Guerra began to run with more freedom and Diego López found space between the lines. Renzo Saravia's injury altered Corberáns defensive plan, but the team gained offensive presence before the break. The equalizer arrived after a quick throw-in: Javi Guerra accelerated to the byline and assisted back for Diego López to finish accurately.
The draw at halftime reflected well what had happened in the first half. Rayo had been sharper at the start, but Valencia ended up growing with the ball and finding dangerous situations.
Second half
After the break, Valencia tried to take more control, especially by loading play through the wings. Luis Rioja and Gayà pushed the team into the opponents half, although Rayo remained very organized defensively and conceded few clear chances.
The Madrid team slowed the rhythm down somewhat and sought quick transitions. Gumbau and Óscar Valentín balanced the midfield well for many minutes, while Nobel Mendy stood firm in several important defensive actions, especially in stopping Riojas attempts to break the game open.
In the final stretch, there was more tension than football. Valencia wanted to go forward driven by Mestalla, but lacked clarity in the final meters. Rayo, meanwhile, managed space better and left the impression of competing with great maturity. Neither side found the winning goal and the draw ended a game with open chances and shifts in momentum.
