Oviedo holds firm with nine against a toothless Getafe
Real Oviedo and Getafe ended in a goalless draw at the Carlos Tartiere, in a rough, eventful match marked by two home expulsions in the second half.
The match arrived loaded with urgency for the Asturians, needing a win to keep their survival hopes alive. Opposite them, Bordalás's Getafe visited Tartiere with the chance to strengthen their European bid but ended up letting a golden opportunity slip despite playing many minutes with a numerical advantage.
First half
The game started with shocks from the first minute. Eric Bailly had to be treated very early and barely continued, leaving his place to David Costas in the 12th minute. Before that, Getafe had already warned with a shot from Martín Satriano that found a response in Aarón Escandell.
Oviedo responded with the clearest chance of the first half: Ilyas Chaira hit the post in the 9th minute after a good appearance by Hassan on the right. It was the big warning from Carbayón in a first half where Getafe gained ground as the minutes passed, especially from set pieces and with approaches from Mario Martín, Davinchi, and Zaid Romero.
The blue team accumulated corners and shots but lacked precision to convert their territorial dominance into an advantage. Oviedo, more intermittent with the ball, clung to defensive order and the work of Dani Calvo to stay alive at the break. The 0-0 scoreline at halftime reflected a competitive duel, with chances but no cutting edge.
Second half
After the break, Bordalás changed things up with Luis Vázquez coming on for Mario Martín. The script changed definitively in the 54th minute when Javi López was sent off after a VAR review. Oviedo was left with ten men, and Getafe found the ideal scenario to tip the match in their favor.
However, the visiting team didnt fully accelerate. Arambarri came close with a header, Luis Milla tried from outside the box, and Álex Sancris forced Escandell into a good save. Almada sought fresh air with Rahim and later with Santi Cazorla, who was applauded by the Carlos Tartiere, while Oviedo tried to survive through effort and retreat.
The situation worsened further for the hosts in the 78th minute when Kwasi Sibo saw a straight red card. With nine players, Oviedo was at the limit, but Getafe once again got stuck in the final meters. Chaira even had a clear chance in the 83rd minute, well-handled by David Soria.
In the closing stages, Getafe piled up crosses, shots, and corners but did not find the necessary clarity. Zaid Romero, Arambarri, Luis Vázquez, Luis Milla, and Borja Mayoral tried without reward. Oviedo resisted with pride, and Getafe left with the feeling of having missed out on two important points.
