Real Sociedad finished the match against Rayo Vallecano with a major concern: Ander Barrenetxea had to go off injured after a run in behind in which he grabbed the back of his thigh and could not continue.

The San Sebastian winger was one of the standout players in the game. In the 67th minute, he produced a superb carry from his own half after a Rayo corner and finished the move with a decisive pass for Orri Oskarsson to make it 1-0.

The bad news came just a few minutes later. Barrenetxea set off running again, felt a muscular problem and went to ground. The medical staff rushed on quickly and the player left the pitch visibly affected, to applause from the Anoeta crowd.

For now, there is no official diagnosis from Real Sociedad. The images point to a possible muscle injury in the back of the thigh, but the medical tests will be needed to establish the exact extent and how long he will be out, if an injury is ultimately confirmed.

"He has an injury. We simply do not yet know exactly how serious it is and we need to do an MRI scan to check it. But yes, it is very unfortunate. Ander Barrenetxea was in a very good moment. Even the game he played today, the duels he won near the box, the goal he set up... He has been a very important player for us in recent matches. But he will be back and he will come back stronger, I am sure of that."

The setback comes at a particularly delicate time for the player, who had returned to a Spain squad for this November international break after several months out of the national team's plans.
