Atlético de Madrid will face Barcelona without Cuti Romero, a major absence for a match that could allow the Rojiblancos to reach the international break as leaders if they beat the team coached by Hansi Flick.

The development of the muscle issues that the Argentine centre-back has been carrying has kept him out of Sunday’s game. Romero also did not play this Tuesday against Bayern de Múnich, a match that ended with Atletico’s first home defeat of the season.

A setback that goes on

The defender had already missed last Saturday’s match against Levante. His absence came despite the fact that, during the week, he had trained with the starting XI in sessions led by Diego Simeone.

Since his arrival at the Metropolitano, Cuti Romero has established himself as one of the cornerstones of the Rojiblancos’ defence. His composure, leadership and ability to organize the back line have made him a key player for the Argentine coach.

The absence will not affect only the next LaLiga match. The centre-back will also be unable to attend the next Argentina squad call-up, which includes two games against Uruguay and Costa Rica on 13 and 17 November.

Simeone will have to find alternatives to strengthen the heart of the defence at an important point in the calendar. Atletico thus lose one of their most decisive players for a match in which the Rojiblancos have much more at stake than just three points.
