MDPeio Canales did not train normally this Friday at Lezama and his fitness remains subject to evolution ahead of the Basque derby that Athletic will play this Sunday against Real Sociedad at San Mamés.
The midfielder received medical attention for some discomfort, although the club has not specified the extent of the issue. With no further tests or official communication in place, his inclusion in the squad is not assured and will depend on how he progresses over the next few hours.
The situation comes at a delicate time for Ernesto Valverde, who already has the confirmed absence of Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta. Canales was one of the options to add weight in midfield and he was coming off a rest period after the Copa del Rey match against AE Prat, within the team's load-management plan.
Athletic are scheduled to return to work this Saturday, a session that will be key to checking whether the player can rejoin the group or if he remains on the sidelines. Until then, his participation against Real Sociedad should be considered a doubt.
Fantasy reading
In Fantasy terms, it is best to be cautious with Peio Canales. Since he has not completed training with his teammates and there is no public diagnosis, starting him carries risk. Saturday's session and the squad list will be the main references before making a final decision.
