Is a new Fantasy bargain emerging for Sevilla?

Sevilla FC

The trip to the Bernabéu allowed Luis García Plaza to check the options he has for covering one of the most sensitive absences in his squad. The loss of Miguel Sierra, injured last week against Levante, has forced the coach to look for solutions on the right flank, where the academy player had been delivering important performances both in attack and in defense.

Rubén Vargas was the one chosen to start the match, a bet that could be explained by his experience and personality. The Swiss, however, produced a fairly modest showing. He barely managed to create danger in the opposing half and he also did not offer the defensive work that characterizes Sierra.

His situation takes on special importance after a summer in which he was close to leaving the club. Vargas needed to get back to the level he had shown in previous seasons, but his chance in a setting like the Bernabéu did not quite help him make his case.

The introduction of Chidera Ejuke changed the feel of the game. The African forward showed personality from his first interventions, constantly looked for one-on-one duels and managed to get the better of Cucurella in several actions. His ability to take on defenders brought a dynamism that had been missing earlier in that area of the pitch.

The Nigerian also had not found the consistency desired at the start of the campaign, and his continued presence in Nervión was even in doubt during the summer transfer window. Despite that, Luis García Plaza had already assessed his performances positively in the final stretch of last season, when he had more playing time.

Now, Ejuke seems to have gained the upper hand over Vargas in the fight to earn more minutes at Sevilla. The next fixture for the Nervión side will be against Osasuna next weekend, a meeting in which new decisions from the coach about that position will be revealed.
