Stuttgart vs Atletico Madrid: Simeone's side aim to make a statement

Atlético de Madrid

Diego Simeone's Atlético de Madrid face another European test after stringing together six straight wins. Following their 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the previous Champions League matchday and a 0-1 win at Espanyol in La Liga, the Colchoneros will be looking to add three crucial points to cement their place in the top part of the table.

The main concern is in defence. Cuti Romero will miss the game with a muscular injury picked up against Espanyol, while Koke is also unavailable. The Argentine's absence could open the door for Marc Pubill to start, partnering Hancko in central defence. The good news is the return of Johnny Cardoso to the squad after recovering from gastroenteritis.

A dangerous Stuttgart in Europe, but inconsistent in Germany

The team coached by Sebastian Hoeness is showing two very different faces this season. While they are going through a difficult spell in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League they have won both of their opening matches, against Vïkings (3-1) and Slovan Bratislava (0-3).

The Germans have dangerous players such as Deniz Undav, Ermedin Demirovic and Bilal El Khannouss, who can cause plenty of problems for the Rojiblancos' back line. However, they arrive after losing to Hamburg in domestic competition.

For Atlético, it will be vital to maintain the defensive solidity of recent weeks and to make the most of the attacking talent of players such as Julián Álvarez, Álex Baena and Kang-in Lee.

Possible line-ups

Stuttgart: Bredlow; Vagnoman, Jeltsch, Chabot, Hendriks; Prömel, Stiller; Führich, El Khannouss, Undav and Demirovic.

Atlético de Madrid: Oblak; Llorente, Pubill, Hancko, Grimaldo; Giuliano Simeone, Hjulmand, Barrios, Baena; Kang-in Lee and Julián Álvarez.
