Toni Kroos takes the first step towards becoming a coach, with Real Madrid waiting
The future of Toni Kroos could once again be linked to professional football, although this time from the bench. The former Real Madrid midfielder has told the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) about his interest in taking part in a coaching course aimed at former professional players.
After two years away from competition, Kroos begins exploring new possibilities within football. The German remains involved in his academy in Boadilla, where he works on the development of young players, but he is now also considering the chance to start a career as a coach.
His intention is to join the coaching course scheduled for the 2027/28 season, a specific programme for experienced professionals from the elite. UEFA limits these calls to 20 places per campaign, and the current season edition is not open to this group.
At present, Kroos has a qualification that allows him to coach up to the third tier of Spanish football, thanks to a special procedure for players who have built up at least seven years of relevant experience at the elite level.
With his current accreditation, he could manage a Primera Federación side. He would also have the option of joining a coaching staff in the First or Second Division as an assistant, although he would not be able to act as head coach in those two categories.
Passing the course he is aiming to take would allow him to obtain the Licence A, which, according to the information published, would enable him to coach teams of any category.
Real Madrid keeps the door open for Kroos
The German's interest in the dugout comes after the Real Madrid assessed the possibility of bringing him into the club's structure last spring. Florentino Pérez wanted to restore his regular presence at Valdebebas, where Kroos continues to be a figure held in especially high regard.
José Ángel Sánchez spoke with the former player about that possibility, but both sides felt that the right circumstances were not yet in place to confirm his return. The aim was to find a clearly defined role and not to bring the German in solely because of his ties to the club.
The relationship between Kroos and the Madrid faithful remains close. His identification with the club was evident during his farewell as a player, and he continues to keep in touch with Valdebebas through activities linked to his academy.
Although that conversation did not end in an agreement, the possibility of Kroos returning to Real Madrid remains open. In the meantime, the German wants to progress step by step in his training as a coach and has already informed the RFEF of his interest in joining the next course for professionals.
