Guedes has a pending score to settle with goals: his next chance to change the script

Real Sociedad

Minutes are starting to come for Guedes. After a summer that affected his preparation, the Real Sociedad forward completed the 90 minutes against Valencia in the last match before the break, an important step in his gradual return to full fitness.

So far, he has accumulated 267 minutes across seven matchdays. He did not feature in the league opener against Real Betis and then gradually worked his way in: he played 16 minutes against Real Madrid, 12 versus Espanyol, 58 in the fourth match, and 72 in the fifth. In the rescheduled sixth matchday game, brought forward due to UEFA Europa League commitments, he added another 19 minutes.

His preparation had been affected since the summer. Guedes joined in when pre-season was already underway and later had to go under the knife for a personal matter. Since then, his integration into collective training has been progressive.

The international break has allowed him to stay in Zubieta and keep building up his workload. He also took part in the EH Txapela against Athletic, although he played as a forward, away from his usual position, and barely had any time on the pitch.

The situation has certain similarities to what happened last season. Back then, the Portuguese had to wait until the 11th matchday to make his debut as a goalscorer. He did it at Anoeta against Athletic, scoring in the 47th minute of a derby that ended with a 3-2 victory for txuri-urdin.

Until that game, he had only accumulated 358 minutes, but his output grew as the season went on. He finished the league with eight goals and eight assists, to which he added another strike in the Copa del Rey.

His performance after arriving from Wolverhampton for four million euros plus two in add-ons ended up making him an undisputed piece for Pellegrino Matarazzo. It also allowed him to be included in Roberto Martínez's Portugal squad for the World Cup, although he did not end up playing any minutes.

Now he has the chance to open his account before last season. The next fixture for the Real Sociedad will be this Sunday, October 11 at 16:15 against Deportivo de La Coruña at Anoeta, where Guedes will be looking for his first goal of the campaign.
