The Frenchman's return takes on special importance given the problems the team has been accumulating in the centre of defence. Huijsen is suspended, Asencio is dealing with an injury and Militao, although he has been working for several days, still needs to regain competitive rhythm after being out for many months.

Until now, Rudiger was the only fit centre-back Mourinho could count on. Konate's possible recovery would give the coach another natural option for the position and would avoid having to turn to Tchouameni or Dumfries to complete the back line.

The French defender had returned early from his France camp after picking up an injury during a training session. Tests detected an injury to the collateral ligament in his right leg and the initial prognosis put his spell on the sidelines at between ten and twelve days.

His recovery at Valdebebas has progressed to the point where he has been able to complete this Tuesday's session with his team-mates. Pending confirmation of how he responds in the coming training sessions, Konate is aiming to be included in the plans of the Real Madrid squad against Villarreal.

The situation is different for Mbappe and Valverde. Neither of them appeared on the pitch during the session and both continued working inside the facilities.

There is optimism about their chances of making Saturday's match, but as of today they have still not rejoined group training.

Asencio, meanwhile, began his recovery process at Valdebebas this Tuesday after undergoing a shin operation. Mendy and Rodrygo continue alternating exercises on the pitch with work in the gym, gradually moving closer to their return.

Mourinho also won't be able to prepare the game with his full squad until Friday. Real Madrid's internationals will be returning in stages after playing their respective commitments with their national teams.
