The decision was made after a meeting held yesterday at Valdebebas between the player, the medical services and the coaching staff. After studying the progress of the crack in the right shin, the parties agreed to turn to surgery in a bid to definitively resolve the pain the academy graduate has been suffering.

The Real Madrid later confirmed in a medical report that Asencio will be operated on this Thursday. From that moment, a recovery process will begin that will keep him away from the pitch for close to three months.

The centre-back had been dealing with this physical issue for months and had tried to avoid the operating room with conservative treatment. The response, however, has not been enough to eliminate the discomfort.

Asencio initially planned to wait until Christmas and then check how the injury was progressing before making a final decision. In the end, the plan has changed and the operation will take place this very week.

Now the margin is getting tighter

The three-week break had been set up as a kind of final test. Asencio had time to work specifically on the area and check whether he could return in conditions for the return of competition. He even had an interesting sporting opportunity ahead.

The Real Madrid will face Villarreal with Huijsen suspended and Konaté still pending confirmation of his recovery. Militao, meanwhile, continues to recover his sensations after a long absence. 

The operating room is back on the table

If the decision is finally made to operate, Asencio would face an estimated recovery of two to three months. The schedule would take him, roughly, to the start of the year before he can return to competing normally.

For the player, it would be a major blow, after he pushed through last season and tried to keep his hopes of being at the World Cup alive, he would now have to accept a long layoff to finally fix an injury that has been affecting him for too long.

Everything seems clear: Asencio's shin is no longer a one-off issue and the option of surgery is becoming more and more likely.
