De la Fuente makes a move after the World Cup: Spain's latest Nations League updates
Spain already has its first squad after winning the 2026 World Cup. Luis de la Fuente keeps much of the title-winning core, but makes four changes, with Josep Martínez and Roberto Fernández as the main newcomers, and the returns of Dean Huijsen and Fermín López.
The Spain national team will face an especially long international window, with four matches between September 26 and October 6. The debut will come at Wembley against England, where Spain will play its first match wearing the second star earned last July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
Of the players who were at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, 22 continue in the squad. De la Fuente is therefore betting on continuity for the group that won Spain's second World Cup as it begins the road to the Nations League 2027.
Among the absences are Joan García, injured; Marcos Llorente, who has stepped away from the national team; Gavi, who started the season injured and has had barely any minutes; and Borja Iglesias.

The change in goalkeeping brings Josep Martínez into the squad. The Inter Milan goalkeeper takes the spot left by Joan García.

DLThe other new face is in attack. Roberto Fernández receives the call from De la Fuente to take Borja Iglesias' place. The Espanyol forward therefore edges out the other options mentioned for that position, where the names of Gonzalo García and Carlos Espí also appeared.

DFThe other two changes from the World Cup are players who already know the national team. Dean Huijsen and Fermín López return to the group after missing the World Cup. The centre-back had been left out of the World Cup squad, while an injury kept the midfielder from taking part in the tournament.
Spain will have four fixtures during this break. After facing England at Wembley on September 26, it will host Croatia at the Sánchez-Pizjuán on the 29th. On October 3, it will play against Czechia at the Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo, and it will close the window again against Croatia, this time at the Estadio Poljud in Split on October 6.
