Julián Álvarez is speeding up his recovery on the pitch and is targeting the derby, although Jonathan David could complicate his direct return to the starting XI for the Rojiblancos.

Julián Álvarez does not want to miss the derby and the Argentine forward made the most of the day off granted by Diego Pablo Simeone to go to Majadahonda and continue his recovery. There are still several days until Atlético-Real Madrid, but the Argentine has already started working on the pitch.

The session included an important part of physical work and Julián Álvarez also touched the ball with Zahínos, one of Atlético's recovery staff, for about half an hour. He carried out technical drills with short passes and different actions with the inside and the instep, although he still avoided long-range strikes.

The Argentine finished the session with several runs at maximum intensity. Sprints are a positive sign in his build-up, although he will still have to check how his body responds in the coming training sessions.

The progress over these days will determine whether Simeone can count on him against Real Madrid and under what conditions he would use him.

The problem for Fantasy

For Biwenger managers, the possible return of Julián Álvarez creates an interesting situation. Getting back a player of his level is always important news, but his return does not automatically mean he will be a starter.

Atlético are coming off a 4-0 win over Osasuna and Jonathan David played a key role in that match. The Canadian has built a strong case to stay in the XI and could force Simeone to make a decision about the makeup of the attack.

Julián's physical evolution will not be the only issue to watch, since his competitive condition and Cholo's plans will carry the same weight when deciding whether he deserves to go straight into the starting lineup.

A session with more protagonists

Julián was not the only player who went to Majadahonda on his day off. Obed Vargas also did work at the Rojiblancos facilities, in his case focused on tactical and physical aspects.

The midfielder still has little prominence under Simeone and his situation is different from Álvarez's. While the Argentine is working to get his place back, Obed is looking for an opportunity that, so far, has not been coming.
