The absence of Julián Alvarez came after a demanding week. The Argentine played the full 90 minutes at Anfield against Liverpool, the first time he had completed a match this season. He finished that game with discomfort, which later led to the overload.

His preparation over the summer also had not followed an ideal path. Julián joined the rojiblanco squad on August 10 after taking part in the World Cup final, then spent a week without training with his teammates and later alternated group sessions with an individualized program. All of that was added to the situation surrounding his future, which also affected him physically and mentally.

The derby is Julián's priority

Before hosting Real Madrid, Atlético has another appointment at the Metropolitano. Osasuna visit the rojiblanco stadium on Wednesday for the midweek round, and that match could help show how the forward's recovery is progressing if his feelings are positive.

The priority, however, is on Sunday. The coaching staff does not want to take risks or rush the timetable just so Julián can return earlier. The aim is for him to arrive at the derby in the best possible condition.

The situation takes on even more importance after it was learned that Barrios, unless there is an unexpected change, will not be available until after the next LaLiga break. Julián also went through the treatment room after the Liverpool game, although in his case the tests keep the option open of seeing him against the Madrid side.
