The serious injury of Augusto Batalla has completely changed the picture between the posts at Rayo Vallecano. Dani Cárdenas was immediately chosen, but the arrival of Emil Audero introduces a much tougher competition than it might seem. We look at who has the edge in the short and medium term, and what a fantasy manager should do.

Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano's goalkeeping seemed to have an undisputed owner at the start of the season. Augusto Batalla was Beñat San José's number one, but the fractured tibia he suffered against Alavés and his subsequent trip to the operating room will keep the Argentine out of action for several months. Estimates point to a recovery period of between three and six months, meaning there is even a possibility that he won't return to compete until 2027.

Dani Cárdenas, the immediate favorite

The first to benefit from Batalla's absence on the sporting side has been Dani Cárdenas. He came on during the match against Alavés after the Argentine's injury and was then named in the starting XI at Camp Nou against Barcelona. In total, he already has 120 minutes this season.

In the short term, Cárdenas starts slightly ahead. He knows the team, has spent several seasons in Vallecas, understands the defensive mechanisms, and has worked through the entire pre-season with Beñat San José. What's more, Audero has barely completed his first training sessions with his new teammates this very week, and the coach himself said on Thursday that the latest signings had just finished their first session and still had to be assessed on whether they were ready even to start the next match.

In fact, several of the predictions for this round's game against Racing still have Cárdenas as a possible starter, a sign that the newcomer may need a bit more time before going straight into the XI.

Audero doesn't look like a signing meant just to be a backup

However, the picture changes quite a lot when we widen the horizon. Rayo responded to Batalla's injury by going to the market and sealing the loan of Emil Audero until the end of the season from Como. The 29-year-old goalkeeper has a significant track record in Italy after spells at Juventus, Sampdoria, Inter, Palermo, Como and Cremonese.

And there's one especially relevant detail: Audero arrives with competitive rhythm and recent experience as a starter. Last season he played 34 Serie A matches with Cremonese, all of them as a starter. So we're not looking at a goalkeeper brought in exclusively to fill out the squad while Batalla recovers.

Rayo's own move offers a clue. The club already had Cárdenas available and, even so, decided on the last day of the window to bring in an established goalkeeper specifically after learning how serious Batalla's injury was. The intention seems to be to create a real competition for the spot.

Who will be the starter in the medium term?

This is where Audero could end up having the advantage. His experience as a regular goalkeeper in Serie A, his age, and the fact that he arrives after a full season as a starter suggest that Rayo won't take too long to give him a chance.

That doesn't mean he will automatically take Cárdenas's place. If the Spaniard responds well over the coming matchdays, puts in strong performances and gives the defence confidence, Beñat San José won't need to change the goalkeeping spot just because of the newcomer's name.

But starting from scratch, our forecast would be this: Cárdenas is slightly favored in the very short term, while Audero has more chances of becoming Rayo's first-choice goalkeeper for much of Batalla's absence.

Fantasy recommendation

For fantasy managers, Rayo's goalkeeping situation has become a high-risk position, so it's not recommending signing any of their keepers right now. Cárdenas offers greater immediate security, especially while Audero finishes adapting. However, as a bet looking ahead over several matchdays, we currently see Audero as the goalkeeper with the most potential to win the starting spot during Batalla's injury.

Therefore, if both are priced similarly, our medium-term bet would be Audero, while avoiding overpaying until you check what will be Beñat San José's first big decision with the two available. If Cárdenas strings together good performances, this battle —never better said— could last a lot longer than expected.
