Mariano changes the game and Alavés punishes a Getafe reduced to ten

The 2026/27 season got under way in Vitoria, with an Alavés side looking to start with a bit more calm after having to secure their survival in the final stretch of the previous campaign. Opposite them was a Getafe led by José Bordalás, which keeps much of its competitive identity and also faces a season with European commitments.

First half

The start quickly confirmed it was not going to be a comfortable game for either team. Getafe managed to show up a little more in the opponent's half during the opening minutes, but the match lost rhythm between duels, fouls and stoppages. Davinchi saw yellow in the 10th minute and Mario Martín in the 23rd, reflecting a first half that was building tension faster than it was producing football.

In that context, Alavés found some openings for Toni Martínez. The striker fired high in the 20th minute and came close again after the half-hour mark following a cross from Denis Suárez, although his shot went near the post. The game stayed tight until the moment that completely changed how it played out.

Kiko Femenía arrived late on Abde Rebbach with a very hard challenge. The incident was reviewed by VAR and ended with a straight red for the blue-and-black full-back in the 42nd minute. Getafe were down to ten before half-time and Bordalás, meanwhile, was also booked amid the protests. Despite their numerical advantage, Alavés did not have time to make use of it before the break and the 0-0 scoreline survived until the dressing rooms.

Second half

The difference of one player was felt immediately. Bordalás withdrew Davinchi to bring on Enes Ünal, while Alavés pushed up and increasingly pinned their opponent back. In the 49th minute, David Soria prevented a goal from Rebbach and Ángel Pérez's attempts; shortly after, he intervened again against Tenaglia. The goalkeeper was holding a draw that was starting to wobble.

Quique Sánchez Flores then decided to shake things up. In the 57th minute, Mariano Díaz and Mikel Rodríguez came on for Aitor Mañas and Denis Suárez. The change proved decisive. Mariano began offering a different kind of reference, attacking the area but also dropping out of it to get involved, and Alavés gained depth as Getafe had already accumulated plenty of minutes defending with ten men.

Getafe's resistance finally gave way in the 73rd minute. Mariano received with space and delivered a precise cross into the area that Nahuel Tenaglia converted into the 1-0 with a powerful header aimed at the corner. It was also the reward for a defender who had already threatened earlier and who ended up being one of the big names of the day in fantasy terms.

Getafe tried to stay in it and Ramón Terrats forced Sivera into action from outside the area, while Ünal had a header that went over the bar. But playing for so long with ten eventually took its toll. With the blue side opening up, Alavés found the spaces that had not existed for much of the match.

And that's when Mariano appeared again. In the 90+1', he drove forward on the counter and finished it himself with a spectacular right-footed strike into the corner from outside the area. With Getafe already broken, there was still a third: in the 90+4', Mikel Rodríguez capped off another home transition inside the area, again with Mariano playing a decisive part. From 0-0 to 3-0 in just over twenty minutes, with the forward at the heart of the entire finish.

For Alavés, Mariano Díaz was the big fantasy winner.
