The future of Gustavo Puerta remains one of the big talking points of the summer in Cantabria. According to these outlets, Cadena SER Cantabria y El Rincón Racinguista , Racing of Santander would have decided to take the negotiations with its star midfielder one step further: offering him a new contract with better financial terms in a bid to protect him and curb the departure of one of the most decisive players in the club's historic rise to La Liga.

The verdiblanco club's move comes at a delicate time. Puerta, who was one of last year's great revelations at the World Cup with the Colombia national team, has become a target for several European sides, including Italian Bologna (who have already made a formal offer) and clubs such as Benfica, who are also said to be keeping a close eye on his situation.

Against this backdrop, the racinguista sporting directors, led by Chema Aragón, have repeatedly stressed that "only the full payment of the release clause" would open the door to a move.
