David Lafra can already boast that he is a two-time champion of the Macro Liga de Comuniate, but he prefers to keep his feet on the ground. At least for now.

Now that you are the champion, should we call you by your name or just “mister”?

«Jajaja. Calling me mister gives it more presence and professionalism, but my name is enough. I have not earned that distinction yet».

Champion humility. After lifting two titles, maybe next season we will have to start talking about Don David Lafra.

A Macro Liga with nearly a thousand “sick people” of Comunio

The champion is very pleased with the evolution of a competition that brings in more participants every season.

«The Macro Liga format is great. Every year there are more of us and, according to the data you publish, we are already close to one thousand “sick people” of Comunio».

David highlights in particular the pyramid structure, split into Champions, Honor Division, First Division and Second Division, which allows participants to rise, fall and progress season after season.

«It is a great incentive for people who want to keep climbing until they reach the top category. The promotion and relegation system is also a success because a lot of people can get promoted. You cannot rest on your laurels. Once you drop into the Honor Division pit, it is not easy to climb back up».

As for the initial setup, Lafra is clear about his preference: 40 million euros and no squad.

«I think it is the fairest option because it minimizes the luck factor of the team you are assigned. I would even be in favor of starting one or two weeks earlier to have more time to build the squad».

He also took part in the Macro Copa, although his run ended in the third round.

«The second time I could not enter because my team exceeded 100 million and it was a mandatory condition. For future editions, that limit could be raised so that all of us can take part».

Analysis, instinct and a flower of considerable size

Winning a competition with some of the best managers in Spain is not easy. You need information, patience, knowledge of the market and, as David himself admits, a small dose of luck.

«Everything in life has a luck factor, that is obvious. But I also spend quite a bit of time looking at news, statistics and matches. Then there is your own harvest, instinct, which can make the difference».

His go-to tool is Sofascore, where he checks players' statistical history before going into the market.

«I like studying the data all the time, but in my case instinct has the final say. I do not like sitting there thinking: “What if I had signed him?”. If I like a player, I go for him».

An aggressive philosophy that explains a big part of his success. David does not wait for a player to break out: he tries to buy him just before.

Fede Valverde, the signing that made him feel like Monchi

Every champion has a transfer-market operation that he remembers with special pride. In Lafra's case, the chosen name is Fede Valverde.

«I went in strong for him and he delivered immediately. I think he was scoring for four or five matches in a row. I made a very good buy with Fede».

During those weeks, the Real Madrid midfielder turned every matchday into a celebration for his owner. David had found his great sword.

However, his most profitable deal came with Marc Pubill.

«I bought him for two million from Luis Ángel, who is a great manager and an even better negotiator. It was the first match in which he was going to play as a starter and, from that moment on, he shot up like crazy».

Pubill responded with solid scores and a significant rise in value.

«I ended up selling him for around nine million. It was a great discovery for me».

Buy him for two million and sell him for nine. A deal worthy of appearing in any fantasy economics handbook.

Offers up to the last euro

David is not a fan of round numbers. In a bidding war, any small detail can be the difference between glory and the dreaded message “offer rejected”.

«Because there are no decimals in offers! If there were, I would use them too. I am the type to push it right up to the units because sometimes a great player slips away from you for just a few euros. You never know exactly where the purchase price might be».

While other participants make elegant, easy-to-remember bids, David turns every bid into a combination more random than Vinicius's output last season.

First the block, then the stars

When it comes to designing a squad, the two-time champion initially goes for balance.

«At the beginning, it does not make much sense to invest 50% of the budget in a single footballer. I prefer to build a balanced team because there is still not much money».

The strategy changes as the competition progresses and the available capital increases.

«When you have a bit more budget, I do like signing a big sword. Nobody minds a sweet».

Balance during the first months and stars to finish the season. A formula that has worked for him on two occasions already.

Gerard Moreno, the player who strikes fear every Friday

All managers have a footballer they love on the pitch, but who causes real panic inside their squad. For David, that player is Gerard Moreno.

«He is a top player when he is in form, but he tends to get injured. Also, it is usually muscle discomfort that does not seem too serious, but it ends up being two or three weeks».

The real problem comes when preparing the lineup.

«You always think about holding on to him because apparently he will not be out for long. Also, Villarreal usually does not report this kind of injury with much clarity. When you set the lineup on Friday, you risk getting a complete blank».

It is not a lack of quality. It is fear of spending the whole weekend staring at your phone and waiting for a call-up that never comes.

A Champions full of fearsome rivals

David does not point to a single opponent. For him, the level of the competition means you have to keep an eye on practically everyone.

«The rivals are all of them and they are very good. With most of them, I had already crossed paths before».

Among the standout names is Manolo, whom he considers the GOAT for his experience, knowledge and consistency.

«He has had a very bad year with injuries, but I am sure he will be back playing the Champions next season».

He also remembers the spectacular end-of-season run by Luis Ángel.

«He started his comeback late. He bought top players when they were injured and at a low price, and he put in an impressive final sprint. I do not know what would have happened if the league had lasted four or five more matchdays».

Luis Alonso began the season at full speed, while Míchel once again proved his ability to dominate the market.

«Luis Alonso started like a shot and thought he would not be catchable. Míchel is also usually up there, he signs very well and he knows the game's dynamics perfectly».

However, the toughest rival was Víctor, champion of the previous edition.

«He is a tough nut to crack. He has been up there for several years and, on top of that, he likes the same players as me».

Next season, Grego will also join, with whom David already took part in a memorable battle three years ago.

«In the Champions, you have the best managers in all of Spain. This is the creme de la creme».

The trophy is looking for a spot next to the family photos

After so many months of news, statistics, impossible bids and last-minute lineups, the time has come to place the prize in a prominent spot.

«If it were up to me, I would put it in the living room, next to the family photos. Now I have to convince my wife. I will have to use my Comunio negotiating skills».

After winning a Macro Liga with nearly a thousand participants, negotiating a space in the living room seems like a challenge he can handle. Although it will probably be the most complicated operation of the whole season.

The challenge: winning two consecutive titles

David Lafra already won the competition in the 2022/23 season and has done it again in the 2025/26. Now he will be looking for something even more difficult: defending the title.

«I will try, why not? Let's see if I can pull it off back-to-back, even though it will be very difficult. The rivals are squeezing, they have a huge level, and here the elite of managers competes».

Data, instinct, bids up to the last euro, and no intention of wondering what would have happened if he had signed that player. That is how you build a champion.
