Bordalás' big dilemma: how to replace Luis Milla and Mauro Arambarri?

Getafe CF face one of the major challenges in their sporting planning: finding a new identity for their midfield after losing two players who have marked a recent era at the Coliseum.

Luis Milla and Mauro Arambarri were not just two regular starters. Both represented a large part of the balance, the personality and the competitiveness of José Bordalás' team.

The first brought composure, clarity and precision on the ball. The second offered intensity, running power, leadership and an enormous ability to impose himself in duels. That is why the problem for Getafe is not simply finding two new midfielders, but dividing among several players all the roles that Milla and Arambarri used to handle.

Luis Milla, the loss of the main organizer

The departure of Luis Milla is a particularly difficult absence to cover. Over the last few seasons, the midfielder had become one of the main organizers of the Azulones' game.

Milla was constantly involved in the build-up play, offering himself to the centre-backs and finding passing lines to get past the opposition's pressure. He also took on a large share of the actions from set pieces and was able to connect the midfield with the attackers.

His exit could mean Getafe lose precision in the first pass, quality in set-piece plays and the ability to control the tempo of matches.

Bordalás has players with intensity, running power and defensive ability, but for now it does not seem he has another player who can immediately replicate all of Milla's creative output.

Arambarri leaves leadership, arrival and character

The absence of Mauro Arambarri is different, though just as important. The Uruguayan perfectly embodied the competitive style Bordalás wants for his teams.

Arambarri brought aggressiveness in the press, the ability to win second balls, an arrival from the second line and the personality to take responsibility in difficult moments.

In addition, his defensive work allowed Luis Milla to enjoy more freedom to organize the game. The Uruguayan was also one of the dressing-room leaders and a reference point for his team-mates on the pitch.

With his departure, Getafe lose much more than a defensive midfielder. They lose a player who knew Bordalás' system perfectly, who mastered the timing of matches and who brought an important share of competitive character.

Mario Martín, called to take on more responsibility

Within the current squad, Mario Martín is one of the players expected to take on greater responsibility. The midfielder has intensity, tactical discipline and the ability to contribute from deeper positions.

Mario Martín can play as a holding midfielder, protect the centre-backs and take on an important part of the build-up. He also has youth and room to improve, which could make him one of the team's new leaders.

However, asking him to replace Luis Milla on his own would be too much. He can take on part of the game's organization, but he still needs to prove that he can create chances and control the tempo of matches with the same consistency.

A step forward with the ball

Without Milla, Mario Martín will have to get involved much more at the start of the moves. Getafe will need him to offer himself constantly, play quickly and find passes capable of breaking the first line of pressure.

His development with the ball could shape much of the ceiling of the new Getafe. If he manages to take that step forward, Bordalás will have a solid base on which to build his new midfield.

Ramón Terrats can add arrival

Ramón Terrats also appears as another piece that could gain prominence. His profile is different from Mario Martín's, as he feels more comfortable operating as an inside player and arriving in positions close to the rival's box.

Terrats can help make up part of the attacking output lost with Arambarri's departure. He has the ability to support the moves, connect with the forwards and show up from the second line.

He is not a natural replacement for Luis Milla, but he can offer link-up ability, mobility and attacking presence. In a partnership made up of Mario Martín and Terrats, the first would take on more defensive responsibilities, while Terrats would have the freedom to push forward.

Uche offers power and the ability to break lines

Another possible solution is Christantus Uche. The Nigerian brings a differential physical component thanks to his power, running and ability to advance through carries.

Uche could be especially useful in open matches or when Getafe needs to press in the opponent's half. His energy allows him to win back possession, attack spaces and create dangerous situations through individual actions.

However, his profile also does not fully resolve Milla's absence. Uche brings dynamism and imbalance, but he is not a pure organizer. To make the most of his qualities, Getafe would need to support him with a player capable of bringing composure and good judgment.

The other squad alternatives

Getafe also have other midfielders such as Yvan Neyou and Javi Muñoz, although their final role will depend on the decisions the club makes during the transfer window.

Neyou can offer physical ability, experience and defensive work, while Javi Muñoz provides running power and involvement in the circulation of the ball.

However, none initially appears as a solution capable of taking on all the creative weight that Luis Milla carried. The club will have to decide whether they can be part of the rotation or whether it would be better to look for a way out for them in order to make new signings.

Getafe need to go to the market

Although Bordalás has several options, the squad needs reinforcements to complete the midfield. The priority should be to find a defensive-minded midfielder with experience and good control of the ball.

Bringing in a more positional player would free Mario Martín and Terrats from some of the defensive work. It would also give the team a piece ready to protect the centre-backs, contest duels and dominate second balls.

Getafe could also need a creative profile. Without Milla, the Azulones run the risk of relying too heavily on direct actions, recoveries in the opponent's half or set-piece plays.

For that reason, the sporting directorate will have to look for players who not only fit Bordalás' intensity, but who can also provide continuity to the moves and make good decisions under pressure.

How could the new midfield be formed?

Mario Martín as a holding midfielder

The first possibility would be to use Mario Martín as the deeper player, with Terrats or Uche alongside him. This formula would give Getafe a young, intense midfield with the ability to press.

The main problem would be in creation. The team could struggle to dominate through possession and find passes between the lines against well-organized opponents.

A new pivot alongside Mario Martín

Another option would be to bring in a defensive midfielder and place Mario Martín slightly further forward. In this way, the young player would have more freedom to take part in the circulation and move closer to the rival's box.

This alternative could offer greater balance and prevent all the responsibility for organization from falling on a single player.

A midfield with three midfielders

Bordalás could also bet, in certain matches, on a structure with three midfielders. A defensive pivot would be supported by Terrats and Uche as inside players.

This setup would provide power, running, pressing and presence in both areas, although it would still be necessary to find a player who brings precision in the final pass.

Bordalás must build a new engine

The big problem for Getafe is that Luis Milla and Mauro Arambarri were two players who complemented each other completely. One brought composure, vision and precision; the other brought intensity, arrival and leadership.

Mario Martín seems ready to become the hub of the new project, while Terrats and Uche can add energy, physicality and attacking presence. However, the market will have to complete a midfield that has lost experience, creativity and hierarchy.

Getafe can build a younger, more dynamic and more physical midfield, but it will need time to recover the automatisms that their two former references provided.

Bordalás' big task will not be finding two individual replacements, but getting several players to share everything that Milla and Arambarri used to do. How he resolves that dilemma will determine a large part of Getafe's performance over the next season.
