PTThe arrival of Leo Román not only represents a top-level boost for the Deportivo de la Coruña. It also completely changes the outlook in one of the positions that has generated the most debate over the past few weeks: goalkeeping.
His arrival has direct consequences for Álvaro Ferllo. The Rioja goalkeeper won the starting spot after joining in the winter transfer window and responded with decisive performances during the final stretch of the campaign. He played 22 consecutive matches, conceded 21 goals and saved three penalties that earned important points for the team, including the saved spot-kick against Leganés in stoppage time that ultimately brought promotion within reach.
With three high-level goalkeepers in the squad, the Rioja man will have to decide whether to accept the fight for a starting place in LaLiga or whether to look for a destination that guarantees him more minutes. At this point, the Elche would be willing to try to secure his services. Right now, Matías Dituro, who extended his contract through June 2027, would be the starting goalkeeper. We should not forget that Dituro was a backup to Iñaki Peña when he was at the club. It is true that Sarabia, who made those decisions, is no longer the coach and now it is up to Martín Anselmi, to decide, but it is at least thought-provoking. Dituro is accompanied as second-choice goalkeeper by Alejandro Iturbe, while the academy player Owen Bosch completes the list of first-team goalkeepers.
The Elche interest in Álvaro Ferllo is also a message to the current goalkeepers. One could be surplus.
