Sergio Rico is looking back towards Nervión. Without a club and already recovered from the serious accident he suffered with a horse, the Sevilla goalkeeper has publicly expressed his desire to return to the club where he was formed.

The move comes in the midst of a full reshuffle of Sevilla's goalkeeping department. This Wednesday, the club announced a new agreement with Newcastle to keep Odysseas Vlachodimos on loan for another season, an operation that covers a significant part of the position, although it does not completely close the chapter on the goalkeepers.

Orjan Nyland saw his contract come to an end and, after playing at the World Cup with Norway, he is negotiating his future as a free agent. That is why José Ignacio Navarro, Sevilla's sporting director, will have to assess the market for another goalkeeper with a profile different from that of the Greek, while at the same time studying what role Alberto Flores will have. The academy player has served as the third-choice goalkeeper in recent years, and it is not out of the question that he could move to compete directly with Vlachodimos.

Sergio Rico offers himself to return to Nervión

Against that backdrop, Sergio Rico's name comes into view. The 32-year-old goalkeeper left Sevilla's academy and made his debut for the first team under Unai Emery. Now, after having overcome the serious accident he suffered while at Paris Saint-Germain, he has made it clear that he would like to wear the Nervión shirt again.

“I would love to go back to Sevilla; it would be going back home, where I have spent more time even than in my own home. They have helped me in my education because I have spent a lot of time at the training ground and I still feel good, I feel 100% strong, and I would love to help the team in every way possible from between the posts. It would be a real pleasure to return to the team of my heart. The most beautiful and special thing about my return to Sevilla would be that this time my children would be watching me from the stands”, Sergio Rico said on the La Grada podcast.

For now, Sevilla is not considering bringing the Sevilla goalkeeper back. The club had explored the possibility of investing in Diego Conde, Villarreal's goalkeeper, although the priority alternative ended up being Vlachodimos. Fran González, from Real Madrid, had also been mentioned as an option to strengthen Sevilla's goalkeeping department.
