Alaves eye Diego Rico to strengthen the full-back position

The Deportivo Alavés is interested in Diego Rico, a left-back who will end his spell with the Getafe at the end of June and will be free to negotiate with any club.

The Burgos-born defender, aged 33, has built up extensive experience in both Spanish football and abroad. Over the course of his career, he has worn the shirts of Zaragoza, Leganés, Bournemouth, Real Sociedad and Getafe, putting together a path defined by consistency and knowledge of the top level.

Interestingly, Mendizorroza holds a special place in his career because it was there that he made his professional debut in September 2013, during a Copa del Rey match against Zaragoza. Before that, he took his first steps at Burgos Promesas, where he caught the eye of the Aragonese club, which brought him into its youth ranks. His progress was steady until he became one of the standout full-backs in Segunda División, a category in which he was named best player in his position during the 2014-15 campaign.

The sporting department led by Sergio Fernández is working on several signings to strengthen different areas of the pitch. Alongside the search for two centre-backs, the club also wants to add reinforcements for the midfield, the wide areas and the forward line. That is why the prospect of bringing in an established player on a particularly attractive no-transfer-fee deal is appealing.

The Diabate operation appears to be cooling off due to the Swedish GAIS's financial demands, who are asking for more than two million euros for 70% of their rights. For now, that figure is outside the plans of the Vitoria-based club.

Alongside Albiazul's interest, other top-flight clubs such as the Espanyol and Elche are also keeping an eye on Diego Rico, meaning his future could be resolved in the coming weeks.
