Reijnders and Nico González step onto the scene for Atlético

The Atlético de Madrid continues to comb the market in search of reinforcements for the engine room. While the priority remains the signing of Joao Gomes, from England two other names linked to the rojiblanco club have emerged: the Dutchman Tijjani Reijnders and the Spaniard Nico González, both belonging to the Manchester City.

Reijnders

He arrived in England last summer from the AC Milan for close to 55 million euros and is under contract until 2030. At 27 years old, he is a midfielder with a strong ability to carry the ball, break lines and reach the opponent's area. He stands out for his stride, his ease in getting past pressure, and his judgment in the final stretch. He can play as a inside player or an advanced playmaker, bringing plenty of dynamism to the circulation. He is not a classic positional pivot, but a player who needs freedom to move around and show up between the lines.

Over the last season, he featured frequently in Pep Guardiola's rotations, although he never quite established himself as a fixed piece in every match. His market value and the investment made by City suggest that any deal would be far beyond Atlético's initial options.

The Juventus are also interested, so if the Atleti wants him, they should not wait too long to make a move.

Nico González

The other alternative is Nico González, a player developed in the FC Barcelona academy. At 24 years old, he offers a profile quite different from Reijnders. He feels comfortable as a defensive midfielder, has the physicality to cover a lot of ground, and stands out for his supporting play, his tactical reading, and his defensive work. He is a more balanced player, with good build-up play and used to taking part in the construction from deeper areas.

His physique allows him to win duels and protect possession well, while technically he has enough tools to play under pressure. Although he does not have Reijnders' arrival or explosive carrying, he offers more control and order in midfield.

If Atlético is looking for a midfielder with the ability to break games open through carrying and arriving in the area, Reijnders fits better. If the priority is to reinforce balance, recovery, and build-up play from the base of the move, Nico González appears as an option closer to the pivot profile that Diego Simeone tends to value.
