DFFernando Calero is already part of the recent history of the Espanyol. The Valladolid-born defender brings an end to a seven-season spell at the club after his contract was concluded, closing a chapter marked by promotions, relegations and a constant presence in some of the most important moments for the club in recent years.
The centre-back arrived at the RCDE Stadium in the summer of 2019 from the Valladolid and quickly became a regular in the squad. Since then he has played 181 official matches for the perica shirt, featuring in both LaLiga and the Segunda Division and even in the Europa League during his first campaign.
Calero leaves behind the memory of a reliable, committed player always ready to take on different roles depending on the team's needs. Although his natural position is centre-back, he also played as a defensive midfielder and even, on occasion, filled in at full-back when circumstances demanded it.
His style of play was always defined by physicality in duels, defensive focus and a strong ability to read dangerous situations. Not being a particularly eye-catching defender, he earned the trust of all the coaches thanks to his consistency and willingness to compete in any context. He also contributed five goals during his time at the club.
This season, at the age of 30, he played 25 matches and surpassed 2,200 minutes on the pitch, taking an active part in the team's survival in LaLiga.
Along with Calero's departure, Espanyol has also confirmed the exit of the players who were on loan during the last campaign. Carlos Romero and Ramon Terrats return to Villarreal, while Charlie Pickel goes back to Cremonese and Cyril Ngonge to Napoli.
With Calero's farewell, one of the longest-running spells in the current squad comes to an end. A player who experienced every side of football at Espanyol and who leaves the club after seven seasons of constant work and quiet influence.
