The market has not officially opened, but Sevilla FC is already making moves. Illan Meslier, the French goalkeeper ends his contract with Leeds United on June 30 and could arrive completely free.

The sporting management is looking for market opportunities with affordable prices. They have to find players with experience, room to grow, and low cost. 

A goalkeeper with experience… and a desire for revenge.  At 26 years old, Illan Meslier already knows what it is to play under pressure. He has defended the goal for Leeds for several seasons in England, in the Premier League. Although his current situation is not the best. This season he has played 2 matches and conceded 6 goals. On the other hand, the previous season, he was the starting goalkeeper, where he played 39 matches in all competitions, conceding 27 goals only and achieving 21 clean sheets.

Playing style

The Frenchman has always stood out for his physique, his reflexes and his ability to command the area. He is a tall, agile, and strong-willed goalkeeper.

At Sevilla they believe that LaLiga’s style of play could benefit Meslier quite a lot. Less back-and-forth than in England, more tactical importance, and an ideal context to feel important again.

Additionally, Sevilla still holds enormous weight at the European and media level. Despite recent difficulties, it remains an attractive club for many footballers looking to relaunch their careers.

The possibility of arriving for free makes the deal a true market bargain. The club would only have to negotiate salary, contract length, and a possible signing bonus.

That said, Sevilla is not alone in the race. Besiktas is also closely monitoring the situation of the French goalkeeper. The Turkish team has been searching for a goalkeeper for some time and considers Meslier a very interesting option. At Nervión, they know that they cannot afford to sleep if they want to close the deal before more interested clubs appear.

It can end well… or it can end badly. But if the Frenchman recovers his level, Sevilla would have a goalkeeper for several years without having paid a transfer fee. And in today’s football, finding such an opportunity is not easy at all.
