The Prodigal Son Returns Home, Sergio Canales Will Return to LaLiga

In Santander, nothing else is being talked about. The possible return of Sergio Canales to Real Racing Club de Santander has ceased to be just a bar rumor and has turned into a very serious possibility. And this time it was the club president himself, Manuel Higuera, who added even more fuel to the fire.

During an appearance on El Partidazo de la Cadena COPE, Higuera left a phrase that has sparked the racing fans' hope: “Both parties want to make it happen.” It couldn’t be clearer. Although, yes, he also wanted to remain cautious by reminding that in football “things are closed only when they are signed.”

But the message had already been sent. The return of Canales to the club from his hometown has been simmering for months. In December, a meeting between the player and Higuera was already known during the Cantabrian’s Christmas vacation in Santander. Officially it was said to be a meal among friends, although few believed that it was just a coffee with dessert.

Now, after announcing his departure from CF Monterrey a few weeks ago, the path seems much clearer. The attacking midfielder ended his adventure in Mexico with an emotional message on social media, thanking the club and the fans for the affection received since his arrival in 2023.

At 35 years old, Canales is still a standout footballer. Quality, experience, leadership, and an enormous emotional bond with Racing. His return would have something of a romantic movie: the hometown boy coming back just as the team returns to the First Division, a prodigal son.

The renewal of Asier Villalibre, thanks to his decisive goals, was the first move to consolidate the project after the promotion, and the possible arrival of Canales would be a tremendous boost of hope for the fans.

In the city, no one wants to jinx it, but the feeling is clear: this story is much closer to becoming reality than it seemed a few months ago.

And if it is finally confirmed before the season ends, at El Sardinero they will have to prepare more than just a simple presentation. Because what concerns Canales would not be just any signing. It would be the return of one of the prodigal sons of racingismo.
