The scare came in yesterday’s match, when the academy player received a blow to that area of the foot. The situation keeps everyone on edge due to the proximity of the World Cup and on Monday he has a consultation scheduled with the club’s medical services to assess the injury.

Medical tests and possible treatment

Fermín returned to the dressing room at halftime with discomfort and, after discussing it with the coaching staff and doctors, it was decided that he would not play the second half. As the symptoms persisted, the appropriate tests will be carried out on Monday to determine the extent of the problem.

The main concern is the possibility that there may be some kind of fracture. In that scenario, the setback could jeopardize his presence at the World Cup or delay his participation, pending the definition of treatment based on the diagnosis.

The fifth metatarsal — the bone that connects the little toe to the ankle — can be affected by stress fractures, either due to repeated impacts or a high load of matches. In cases where surgery is required for a fracture in that area, the downtime is no less than two months.

From a national team perspective, Luis de la Fuente will announce the call-up list on Monday, May 25. Spain will debut at the World Cup on June 15 against Cape Verde in Atlanta, in a tournament that ends on July 19, with barely four weeks ahead.

Fermín, moreover, arrives at this stage after an intense 2024: he was champion of the European Championship and a month later competed in the Olympic Games, where he won gold in Paris and scored six goals, two of them in the final against France (3-5) at the Parc des Princes.
