The news of the supposed agreement between Míchel and Ajax has ignited debate… and not exactly because of excitement, but because of the timing of its release. To be honest, this is unnecessary in Girona right now.

Several media outlets have published the news. Among them are reputable sources, apparently, so the news seems to be true.

Girona FC is deeply involved in a tough battle to stay in LaLiga, with their backs against the wall and two matchdays that could define the club's future. And in that context, news suggesting that Míchel has practically finalized his signing with AFC Ajax sounds, at best, like poor communication. 

Because one thing is that the coach's future is uncertain — something completely normal when a coach is in the spotlight — and quite another is to leak or publish that “only the signature is missing” right now, when the team is fighting for its life. The noise this generates doesn’t help anyone in the dressing room and probably doesn’t help Míchel either.

Girona cannot afford distractions. They need to be fully focused, maintain competitive tension and keep the spotlight on the goal of staying in the First Division. And in this scenario, this kind of news hits like a bucket of cold water. Not because it’s impossible that Míchel will leave in summer, but because the timing is especially delicate and even the slightest crack is noticeable.

Also, it feels a bit off because the coach himself has publicly insisted that he doesn’t want to talk about his future until the team is safe. And yet, the external noise appears right now, breaking that message of unity that had been tried to build from within the club.

It must also be said: Ajax’s interest makes sense. It’s a big, historic club with a rebuilding project, and a coach profile like Míchel’s fits perfectly with their idea of offensive play and working with youngsters. That is not in question.

But what can be criticized is the timing. These types of leaks add nothing. On the contrary: they add pressure, fuel doubts, and distract from the only thing that matters right now, which is staying up.

In summary: the move may be logical in the future, even understandable from a sporting perspective. But the moment this information came out is, at least, quite unfortunate.
