The first consequence is immediate: Ionut Radu is out of the call-up for Romania for the World Cup playoff starting this Thursday. The coach, Mircea Lucescu, has called up Craiova goalkeeper Laurentiu Popescu to cover his absence in an event marked for the keeper, who this season had regained his spot with the national team.

Concern shot up after the league match against Alavés, a bitter afternoon for the group due to the comeback suffered after the initial 3-0. In that match, Radu injured his right calf while jumping to block a lateral cross and chose to continue on the field despite showing clear signs of pain. In the final stretch, he did not suffer further, but at the end of the match he needed help to get to the locker room, leaning on two medical staff members.

The next step will be set by the Celta medical services: the goalkeeper is scheduled this afternoon to undergo tests and precisely determine the injury affecting the calf of his right leg. Depending on its severity, he could reappear after the break and especially make it in time for the Europa League quarterfinals against Freiburg. The Celta medical team will announce tomorrow the goalkeeper’s estimated recovery time.
